The Lopin: A Small Plot, a Big Vision

At the corner of Acadie and Sauvé, in the vibrant heart of Montreal’s Central District, a once-vacant plot of land owned by Simplex is coming to life. But this isn’t just another landscaping project, it’s a bold statement. Led by Simplex Equipment Rental in partnership with the SDC District Central, the Le Lopin project is a concrete step toward a greener, more resilient, and community-driven future.

The Lopin Project: A New Green Space in the Heart of the Central District

Le Lopin is set to become a semi-private green space, open to Simplex employees and workers from the surrounding area. This pocket of greenery will offer a welcome break from the pace of urban life. It reflects a shared vision: a district where well-being, nature, and work life coexist in harmony.

The project is part of Simplex Réflex, our eco-conscious initiative aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. By greening the site, Le Lopin will serve as a living carbon sink, help cool the urban heat island, and include a small-scale vegetable garden. Every tree planted, every square meter of green space, is a step toward a more sustainable future.

Key Milestones in Bringing the Project to Life

The Le Lopin project first took root at the end of 2024, supported from the start by major partners like Marché Central and the Fonds Signature Métropole. Today, work is well underway. Following the initial site marking, the team has moved on to excavation, gabion installation, the pergola structure, and planting. Special attention is being given to stormwater management, with a one-meter-wide retention strip, as well as to lighting design, to ensure the space feels both safe and welcoming.

From Concept to Completion

Throughout 2025, several passionate teams came together to bring this meaningful project to life. The first step was securing the necessary permits. Then, in collaboration with TakTik Communication, a thoughtful and inviting space was designed. With support from La Ferme de Rue and Wallemi, each plant was carefully selected for its function, whether edible, decorative, or structural.

A Project in Motion

Since construction began, every step has been handled with care. Here are the main phases scheduled through the end of 2025:

  • Excavation of the path and pergola area
  • Installation of gabions and electrical components
  • Adding fresh soil and laying stone for the pathway
  • Planting and installation of flowering turf
  • Setting up the pergola

Work will continue into summer 2026, with the final features being added. But Le Lopin doesn’t end there. This is a living space, designed to grow and evolve. Simplex is committed to maintaining and enriching it year after year, a place built to inspire, support biodiversity, and spark collective pride.

The Impact and Simplex’s Commitment to the Community

The Le Lopin project goes far beyond transforming a vacant plot of land. It’s the result of a strong collaboration with dedicated partners like the SDC District Central, Marché Central, and the Fonds Signature Métropole.

Célestine Véronneau, Assistant Director and Co-owner

"This pilot project will directly support our climate goals. It’s also a tool for engaging both our team and the wider community. At Simplex, we believe that every square meter of green space is a step toward a more sustainable future and that every local project can have a global impact."

Beyond its construction, Le Lopin represents a long-term commitment. Simplex is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing this living space year after year, staying true to its mission of creating a place for renewal, biodiversity, and collective pride in the heart of the city
